Graphic designers who skillfully use Adobe Illustrator would learn to use a wide variety of keyboard shortcuts to streamline their work.
On the other hand, I believe that it is sufficient to be able to use only limited functions if you use Illustrator for weaving design.
In this article, I would like to introduce keyboard shortcuts that will greatly facilitate your weaving design work if you remember them.
1. File menu
Of the commands in the File menu, the most commonly used are Open, Save, Save As, and Print.
The shortcuts for these are shown in the table below:
| Shortcuts | Mac | Windows |
|---|---|---|
| File Open | Command + O | Ctrl + O |
| Save | Command + S | Ctrl + S |
| Save As | Shift + Command + S | Shift + Ctrl + S |
| Command + P | Ctrl + P |
2. Edit menu
Among the commands in the Edit menu, the following four are worth remembering:
| Shortcuts | Mac | Windows |
|---|---|---|
| Undo | Command + Z | Ctrl + Z |
| Cut | Command + X | Ctrl + X |
| Copy | Command + C | Ctrl + C |
| Paste | Command + V | Ctrl + V |
3. Object menu
Next is the Object menu. I recommend you remember the “Transform Again” shortcut because I use it so many times.
In addition, I have listed three more. If you use the “Lock” and “Unlock” functions frequently, it is useful to remember them.
| Shortcuts | Mac | Windows |
|---|---|---|
| Transform Again | Command + D | Ctrl + D |
| Group selected objects | Command + G | Ctrl + G |
| Lock a selection | Command + 2 | Ctrl + 2 |
| Unlock All | Option + Command + 2 | Alt + Ctrl + 2 |
4. Select menu
The only shortcut to remember out of the Select menu is this “Select All”.
| Shortcuts | Mac | Windows |
|---|---|---|
| Select All | Command + A | Ctrl + A |
5. View menu
Here are the two most important View menu commands to remember.
If the artboard is too large or too small while you are working, you can quickly check the entire image by using these shortcuts to display it in actual size or as a whole, rather than having to switch to the zoom tool and zoom in or out every time you want to view it.
| Shortcuts | Mac | Windows |
|---|---|---|
| View Actual Size | Command + 1 | Ctrl + 1 |
| Fit Artboard in Window | Command + 0 | Ctrl + 0 |
6. Tool selection, etc.
Finally, there are shortcuts for quick selection of frequently used tools.
Also, be sure to remember “Shift-click,” which is used when you want to select multiple objects during object selection.
| Shortcuts | Mac | Windows |
|---|---|---|
| Temporarily switch to Zoom tool in magnify mode | Spacebar + Command | Ctrl + Spacebar |
| Temporarily switch to Zoom tool in reduce mode | Spacebar + Command + Option | Ctrl + Alt + Spacebar |
| Temporarily switch to Hand tool (when not in text-edit mode) | Spacebar | Spacebar |
| Hand tool | H | H |
| Zoom tool | Z | Z |
| Selection tool | V | V |
| Select multiple objects | Shift-click | Shift-click |
Keyboard shortcuts make working in Illustrator easier. Try to learn them little by little.
I hope the above information is helpful.
Thank you for reading to the end!
