If you enjoy geometric patterns and playful color combinations, this free small weaving template is a great place to start.
This free template is a simplified version of my original retro tile–inspired geometric weaving design, created to help you explore geometric weaving in a relaxed and approachable way.
With this template, you can experience the structure and rhythm of the pattern at your own pace while enjoying the freedom to choose your own colors.
Below is a quick overview of what you’ll find in this post.
1. What You Can Make
With this template, you can weave the following piece:
- A simplified retro tile–inspired geometric tapestry
- Approx. 5 in W × 5–5.5 in H (12.5 × 12.5–13.5 cm)
- Suitable for wall decor, small framed pieces, coasters/mug rug, and sampler-style projects
2. What’s Included
The PDF file includes the following sections:
- Instructions (P.1-8)
Covers how to use the templates, tool information, yarn suggestions, warp sett, and finishing guidance, with helpful links to videos and articles.
- 01 Actual Ratio Grid (P.9)
Displays the actual vertical and horizontal ratio of the finished piece. Use this grid to understand the real proportions before weaving.
- 02 Stretched Ratio Grid for Weaving (P.10)
A vertically stretched version of the actual ratio grid. Place it next to your loom (on screen or printed) and check the grid while weaving to maintain correct alignment.
- 03 Weft Path (P.11)
Shows the weft path through the design, helping you better understand the weft movement.
- 04 Weaving Order (P.12)
A sample weaving order. Following this example can help you weave the pattern smoothly.
- 05 Weft Length Guide (P.13)
Provides an approximate guide to the number of rows needed when preparing weft yarn for each color part.
- 06 Color Sample (P.14)
Provides several color scheme ideas for the design. You can follow them or freely choose your own yarn colors.
3. Who This Template Is For
This template is a good fit for:
- Anyone who wants a small, relaxing weaving project
- Best for weavers who have completed at least one small project
- Basic warping knowledge recommended
4. Loom & Materials
Below is a summary of the required tools, materials, and settings. Please refer to the Instructions section for details.
- Frame loom (minimum 5” weaving width)
- Warp sett: 8 epi
- This design is based on 39 warp threads. For best results, a total of 41 warp threads (39 + 2) is recommended by adding a double floating selvedge (DFS) on both sides.
- Wool weft suitable for tapestry weaving
5. Tips
In this design, the background sections are woven in continuous passes—one for the right side and one for the left—so you don’t need to finish tails for every block.
Instead of trimming and tucking each time, the weft is simply carried and connected along the back.
I recorded a short YouTube video demonstrating how to connect weft yarn on the reverse side for a smooth weaving flow.
Watch it here.
